Topic 8

TASK 2
Staphylococcus, also known as staph, is bacteria that is almost always found on the skin and in the nose of pretty much healthy people. For the most part, they look like pimples or boils on the skin, which causes red and swollen and may include pus in the boils/pimples. (I know, it’s disgusting). Anyways, sometimes staph can have more sever and harmful reactions than the boils which are but not limited to the infection spreading into the lungs, heart, bones, or even spread through the body in the blood stream. There are even some types of staff that are resistant to medicine, such as MRSA (Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus. This sounds awful, I know, but in most cases it only happens in hospitals, health care facilities (nursing homes, etc.). Basically to sum it up, it finds its way to people who have very weak immune systems.
This could be very dangerous for a daycare environment. The children touch everything and put everything, so this staff could definitely be passed with ease among the children. Also, although I know that it is very unlikely, the MRSA could get to the children if they were exposed to it somehow, because children DO have very weak immune systems. They are always catching each other’s colds and getting sick.

TASK 3
Since my post was about sicknesses that children can get, I decided that I would kind of talk about realization that I had. Today I was in the daycare and these children had runny noses and were coughing horribly, and that really highlights the fact that we REALLY have to sanitize everything that's in the room at the end of the day. We do this anyways (of course), but the reasoning behind it is VERY important. If the children don't get sick that day from sneezing and coughing on each other, then they more than likely will get sick the next day if we didn't sanitize everything.
Anyways, it's still going really well at the daycare, and I'm sad that I only have a little while longer to inter there! Although it's coming to an end, I almost feel like I would be welcome there regardless of my internship(:

topic 10: Communication skills

TASK 1

Written: email, letter, smart board

Verbal: through speaking, through song, through recorded audiotape

non-verbal: hand gestures, symbols, expressions on one's face

written: if your smart board wasn't working, then you could get it fixed or call technical support. you're Internet might not be working, so you could go to the public library. You might not be able to find a pen, so you could use a marker or colored pencil.

Verbal: you could have a soar throat and not be able to talk well, so you could go to the store and get some cough drops. You might not be singing your best that day, so you could get someone else to sing for you. Your tape player might be out of batteries, so you could go to the store and get some more.

non-verbal: you may have broken your hand, so you could just use the other one. Someone may not be able to understand the symbols that you're making, so you could try easier ones to comprehend. You might be sad and trying to act happy, so you could try and take your mind off whatever is making you sad so that your facial expressions are clearer to read.

TASK 2
In my eyes my communication skills are pretty decent. No one is perfect, and no one can communicate in the right and good way all the time, but I do try. My body language may show if I'm uncomfortable even if I'm trying to smile, so I may need to work on expressing and communicating with the other person my out of place feelings. Regardless of that though, I think that I do communicate well with most people that I encounter on a daily basis. I may communicate differently with certain people, like if I'm explaining something important to my boyfriend, I may use hand gestures to express my self to the extent that I feel is right. I do this because I'm comfortable with him. With my mom I may communicate differently than with my friends, because I don't usually email my mom and with my friends I do that often. I do this because I see my mom everyday and I may not see my friends every day. I could definitely improve my communications in a few ways that I can see. I could change it by visiting or calling my friends more than I email them, because those two things are more personal than just emailing or texting.

TASK 3 (WEEKLY JOURNAL)
My communication skills are always on their best behavior when I am at my internship. With the little kids, they may not understand everything, but if I point while I say what I'm saying, they will understand better. Also, I have learned that it is good to talk to the children when they make a noise to get your attention so that they learn the talk and get talked back to concept. So at the daycare I do use the communication skills of talking or mimicking their noises. Tomorrow I am looking forward to being at the day care (just like every Wednesday), but also, my and my co-worker, Brittany, get to hide Easter Eggs for the children! I'm looking forward to that event because I know how much the kids will like looking for and finding the eggs. It makes me laugh when they laugh, and when they cry, sometimes I'd like to cry out of frustration, but usually I just laugh about that as well. Besides all of that, everything is going beautifully, as always, and I'm still loving it!

TASK 2

How Do You Learn? Profile Description
The Visual Learner

Visual learners draw mental pictures when trying to remember things. They learn best by looking at pictures, graphs, charts, and designs. Visual learners usually absorb information best from books and class notes and by translating ideas into visual formats. Color-coding works well for visual learners. So does writing information on flashcards and highlighting key concepts.

The Auditory Learner

Auditory learners learn best when they hear spoken words. They focus best by listening and by verbalizing concepts out loud. Auditory learners probably learn a lot from lectures and class discussions. Taping lectures and discussions works well. So does reading study notes out loud and stating math problem and concepts verbally.

The Tactile/Kinesthetic Learner

Tactile and kinesthetic learners benefit most from “hands-on” activities. They usually clarify ideas by writing them down and understand formulas by manipulating them. Tactile/ kinesthetic learners learn best in laboratory settings and by doing fieldwork and class demonstrations. Making models to illustrate concepts works well. So does typing information on the computer, reorganizing material in different ways, and taping class lectures and listening to them during exercise.

Making Your Learning Style Work for You

Once you have figured out the way you learn, you will need to use specific strategies to help you with your way of learning. For example, if you are a visual learner, you could visual materials such as pictures or charts to help you learn and retain information.

Below are some practical suggestions for the various types of learners:

TASK 3

Visual Learners:
· Use visual materials such as pictures, charts, maps, graphs, etc.
· Have a clear view of your teachers when you are speaking so you can see their body language and facial expression.
· Use color to highlight important points in text.
· Take notes or ask your teacher to provide handouts.
· Illustrate your ideas as a picture or brainstorming bubbles before writing them down.
· Write a story and illustrate it.
· Use multi-media (e.g.. computers, videos, etc.).
· Study in a quiet place away from auditory disturbances.
· Read illustrated books.
· Visualize information as a picture to aid memorization.

Auditory Learners:
· Participate in class discussions/debates.
· Make speeches and presentations.
· Use a tape recorder during lectures instead of taking notes.
· Read text out aloud.
· Create musical jingles or raps to aid memorization.
· Create mnemonics to aid memorization.
· Discuss your ideas verbally.
· Dictate to someone while they write down your thoughts.
· Use verbal analogies and storytelling to demonstrate your point.

Tactile/Kinesthetic Learners:
· Take frequent study breaks.
· Move around to learn new things (e.g., read while on an exercise bike, mold a piece of clay to learn a new concept).
· Work at a standing position.
· Chew while studying.
· Use bright colors to highlight reading material.
· Dress up your work space with posters.
· If you wish, listen to music while you study.
· Skim though reading material to get a rough idea of what it’s about before settling down to read it in detail.

Learning Styles Work Plan

Use the space below to create your personalized work plan for the subjects listed. Include at least two strategies for each subject that could be used for the different learning style types. Use your handouts and
www.studygs.net as resources when researching strategies.

. Ask for a handout of the material she’s teaching so I can read it while she’s talking

TASK 5

At first, I have to admit that I did not expect to enjoy my service learning placement, just for the fact that it was at my school, but I really and honestly do love it. I learn something new almost every time that I go there. Something that I have learned the past few weeks is that with the babies and even the toddlers, you can't hold them every time they cry, because they then learn that they can get away with anything that they want to. Also, you have to respect the wishes of the people, women in my case, because they have feelings and thoughts about how you should respond to the children, and that's just something that you have to respect.
Everyday I go into my internship is a positive experience for me. I can't say that I absolutely love the sound of a baby shrieking, but hey, what can you do. It is a daycare after all with very small children. My learning style that I found in the above survey type thing can help me because if i didn't understand how to free a piece of food from a choking child's mouth, I could be able to look at a poster on the wall and clearly understand. I'm sure that if that were to happen, I would already know because the teachers have informed me of this already, but I'm just giving an example.

Topic 9 - attitudes

TASK 1
I read the poem on attitudes.

TASK 2
1. The question that I was asked is a bit of a hard one to honestly answer, but I will put aside pride and try my best. when I was younger, my attitude highly reflected by mood and I actually thought that those two aspects went hand in hand. Now that I'm older and more mature, I've learned how to, for the most part, control my attitude, regardless of my emotions and my mood. An example of this is when I work. Even if I'm mad or sad, I have to control how I act and my attitude, but it's just not appropriate to bring personal things to public places, such as work. My reactions to situations in life are probably about equal in the way of them being positive and negative. i mean, when the situation is going on, say at home, I won't try to control my emotions and attitude, although they may be expressed as smaller or not to the extent I feel them inside.

2. I will have to admit that in my job, there is definitely some improvement that could be made. I didn't mean to make it sound like I can hold it together all the time at work, because I'm not perfect. Sometimes there is this one girl that gets on my last nerve, and something that I could improve on is not letting the bad mood that I let her get me in affect the way a handle and treat the customers and coworkers. In my service learning, honestly, those little kids don't set me off. Although that's true, I could make some improvement in the area of not getting attached to the children. My attitude is very lovey-dovey with these children, and it's not a good idea for you and their mothers to get like that with little children, or older children for that matter.

3. I'm the type of person who is very affected by the thoughts and feelings of others. I have gotten worlds better with not caring, but I still do let the attitudes of my family of friends get the better of my sometimes. Sometimes it's a good thing. Say my boyfriend was mad at me or upset with me, and because of that I was able to look at what I was doing wrong, and not only realize my flaw this time, but also try not to do it in the future. When I was younger though, Say a certain girl had an approving attitude towards me, I might have tried to change the way I really was. It's not like I was wrong or flawed, I just wasn't what she wanted or liked, and it wasn't okay with me at the time.

Topic 11 - cell hphone etiquette

Task 1
The results from the quiz said that I knew proper cellphone etiquette, but that i just didn't use it all the time. Although it said that, it also said that with practice, i would have it down in no time.

Task 2
I read the rules on cell phone etiquette.

Task 3
Honestly, I really loved my service learning. I LOVE little kids in the months to the 4's. The instructors were very clear about how things should be done, such as holding the babies, feeding them, playing with them, etc. The really emphasized on not holding the baby all day, so that the baby didn't expect to be held all day. They taught me about not just letting the toddlers play with toys, but also reading books to them and showing them the pictures, etc. All of the supervisors were very professional and nice, wich are definitely qualities that I want to have in myself if I am ever a supervisor in the future. They also seemed to really just love kids, wich is a very good thing. It sounds crazy, but there are people who get into childcare who don't like kids. God only knows why. Also, My supervisors handled some of my, probably, stupid questions very well with straight up answers, which is good and is also another quality that I would like to be able to see in myself.

Time management - topic 6

TASK 1 reading

TASK 2
7:30 - wake up
7:32 - some a cigarette
7:40 - straighten my hair
7:55 - change
8:05 - brush my teeth
8:08 - run out the door, grabbing food, lighting a cigarette, getting in the car.
8:15 - get to walmart
8:35 - get on the bus.

TASK 3
Before you go to bed at night, you tell your self that you're going to get up when you're alarm goes off, and that you're not going to hit the snooze. In the morning when you wake up, you're really tired, and you hit the snooze!! There are ways to avoid this problem. If you set you're alarm, say an hour before you're actually supposed to get up, and then when you wake up, set your alarm for 20 minutes later, etc. By doing this, you will be ready to get up by the time you finally have to, because you're not dead asleep. Although it's good to be able to say goodbye to the snooze button, if that's what you like, then I can tell you someways to be able to hit the snooze, and still be ready to walk out the door on time, or before! Say you picked out your clothes the night before, and you made your lunch while you were making dinner. That would probably cut off about 20 to 30 minutes in the morning! Another good way to cut off your time getting ready in the morning, is to already know exactly where you are going, making sure that the directions that you have are correct.

If you find yourself overwhelmed with obligations, have no fear! You need to make some time for you to relax and to be able to wind down at the end of a long and stress full day. Maybe take a long hot shower, or get in a bubble bath. Some people enjoy exercising, or watching T.V. Anything that will work for you will do! You just have to make sure that you make some time for YOU in your busy schedule, because if you don't, you may loose focus or determination from exhaustion.
